About Michelle
Michelle Exline Minovi is a highly skilled divorce and family mediator with 12+ years family law experience.
As Managing Attorney at the legal services non-profit Ayuda in Washington, D.C., Michelle represented low-income and Spanish-speaking immigrant clients in complex matrimonial cases in the context of domestic violence. After moving to Brooklyn, Michelle litigated and won sole custody on behalf of a mother of two children who was forced to leave the ultra-orthodox community because she identified as queer. After three years of intense litigation, Michelle wondered if there was an alternative way to divorce. Michelle knew she had to pivot from litigation to mediation when she took her first mediation training at the Center for Understanding Conflict.
Informed by her experience representing underserved individuals, Michelle brings a deep understanding of trauma, family conflict, child development, and family law litigation to mediation.
As a mediator, Michelle values the process as well as the outcome. Michelle is a board member of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York, a member of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation, and serves as a Committee Member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution and Family Law Sections for the Brooklyn Bar Association. Michelle speaks proficient Spanish.

More about Michelle
Where did you grow up?
I grew up on a free-range hog farm in northern Iowa.
What is something unique about your childhood?
I am the oldest of four daughters. Since we grew up on a hog farm, my sisters and I had to learn all the traditional male roles, like how to drive tractors, and wean hogs.
What is your favorite city?
Brooklyn! But when I’m not in Brooklyn, I prefer being in the countryside. I particularly love the Catskills.
What is your favorite family tradition?
My favorite family tradition is actually the Persian new year. Being married to an Iranian immigrant who won asylum after he fled his country back in 1981, and with three Iranian-American children, I've adopted this beautiful tradition of celebrating the first day of spring with delicious Iranian food and family.
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
When I’m not working, I love to recuperate by getting outdoors. Walks in Prospect Park, biking in Brooklyn, and skiing in the winter are some of my favorite activities. I enjoy cooking new recipes and hosting friends and family. More recently I’ve been working on my gardening green thumb and practicing meditation. I enjoy a good challenge via learning new things, finding solutions to problems, and exploring new ideas.
What is your favorite part of being a mediator?
Listening. I love hearing families’ stories. Every family is so unique and has their own dynamic; I never tire of hearing them.
What motivates you to work hard?
The new information coming out about our brains is so fascinating and makes so much sense. I'm definitely motivated by a few things: interest, the more I like a subject, the more I'll invest in it, and positive emotions, e.g., how I feel after I do something like after I exercise I feel so much better so I'll do it again. And I must admit, deadlines!
What would you be if you weren’t a mediator?
I would travel the world chasing winter so I could ski, snowshoe and ice skate all year round.
